The Great Cymbal Crash Incident

by Michael Smith

During our senior year, Al Opland wanted to record our award-winning band in order to release a LP record album through Mark records LLC. We were playing a classical music piece (Cannot remember the name) that contained a very loud FFF (Triple F) triumphant cymbal crash about 200 rest measures into the suite. I was on cymbals for that recording. Always prided myself in keeping count as to where we were musically in selections, as it is tough to hide percussion errors!  Unfortunately, we all were very nervous because Al Opland had microphones all around the band room, wires running out of the room and his wife Anna Mae was out in the van with the Mark Records techs running the big pro tape recorders. This was not just another practice session!

To my horror being extremely nervous, I unfortunately lost count of the music about five minutes into this 10-minute classical piece with my mighty FFF cymbal crash coming up and the tape recorders running. Having played this music a number of times in practice, I thought I knew the exact place where the mighty cymbal crash needed to be. With Al Opland swinging the baton in his typical military precise fashion, I guessed at the cymbal crash timing.
“CRASH” went my cymbals with Al looking up at me. Knew it was the wrong place in the music right after I did it and saw Al Opland’s head start shaking with disapproval, but to my surprise Al kept the piece going to the end. He put his baton down and I thought “I am in the band doghouse now!”

Gratefully Al called out to Anna Mae in the van and asked if Mr. Smith’s misplaced massive cymbal crash ruined the piece. To this very day I am so grateful that Anna Mae answered back “No, sounded just fine, no need to re-record” She became my hero from that day forward!
